News from Southern Maine: To Plant or Not to Plant

Flood warnings are out this week in southern Maine which is normal for this time of year.  We spent the weekend expanding our garden bed–both vegetable and perennial or at least preparing to do so.  We won’t plant anything until the soil warms up, but there is a lot of space to fill.  My head is crammed full of descriptions of the merits of various cultivars.  Do I plant castor beans to ward off Japanese beetles?  Will a few tobacco plants smell as good as advertised?  Are cranesbill geranium truly indispensible?  Which tomato varieties will resist the early blight?   Why have I never noticed the resemblance between descriptions of fine wine on a restaurant menu and new flowers in a seed catalogue?

Stay dry,
