News from Southern Maine: In Pursuit of “Big Night”

Yes, it is finally spring in southern Maine and ‘big night’ is upon us.  The areal vernal pool migration aficionados are making hourly calls to the weather station for updates on the forecast.  False alarms went out last night as folks were poised to head out into the rain to escort frogs and salamanders across the roads between forests and vernal pools.  The rain never materialized, but tomorrow night is a definite possibility.  The job of assisting amphibians across roadways is only undertaken on very rural roads, preferably where there is virtually no traffic.  The best part is watching excited children tenderly usher the creatures to safety.  Even the lowly earthworm is greeted with enthusiasm although it is undoubtedly confused by the need for a journey to the ‘other side’.  On heavily traveled roadways, the humans are at risk as well, so there are many places where the little creatures must make their treacherous crossing unassisted.  My plan is to head to some nearby vernal pools to watch the fun.

Think  Spring!
