News from Southern Maine: Falling toward Winter

The seasons are changing.  Leaves turn, days shorten and birds fly south.  The wildlife camera reveals that skunks, squirrels, and crows frequent our yard.  Deer and grey fox cruise through in the midnight hours.  And I know I can usually find a great blue heron on a particular rock below the Sebago lake dam most afternoons.  In the garden we’re working on extending the season by planting lettuce and beets in cold frames and storing potatoes and winter squash under the steps to the basement.  I’m digging up and potting the poinsettias I’ve ‘summered over’ outside along with some herbs, and a few flowers.  Never mind that I have no place to put them.   I just want to bring summer inside for the cold months of the year.

I love fall–the shock of the first cold days, brilliant colors, and damp air that foreshadows winter.  In a couple weeks we’ll be pressing apples for cider, lighting a fire at night, and making plans for Thanksgiving.  And before you know it; we’ll be wishing for snow!

Keep Warm,
Jeanne Christie
