The dog days of summer have arrived. The lake water is warm, the tomatoes are thriving, and the humans are wilting. There are no air conditioners left languishing on the shelves of local appliance stores. They are all in use. When air conditioning isn’t available Mainers adapt. On a race course last weekend neighbors erected sprinklers all along the road. Small boys stood poised with garden hoses to blast overheated runners as they passed. At the turnaround point some runners waded into the ocean up to the necks before returning to the course. A couple spectators got overheated, but the runners didn’t. People helping people made it a very special day.
Stay cool,
Jeanne Christie
