Wetlands
2006: Some Final Thoughts
On behalf of the Association of State Wetland Managers (ASWM), sponsors
and cooperating parties, we would like to thank everyone who participated
in Wetlands 2006 for making the conference a successful event. We
received many compliments on the symposium and in particular on
the consistent high quality, results oriented presentations. This
is only possible because of the expertise and experience that were
provided by speakers, participants and the many volunteers who assisted
us. Many participants have requested the opportunity to review the
PowerPoint presentations from the conference. These will be converted
to PDF files and posted with the permission of the authors in late
October.
There were around 260+ participants at the three day conference
and about half attended the Monday legal symposium, field trip or
remote sensing workshop. There was a good balance of scientists,
program managers, nonprofit and private sector participants, and
a number of participants also commented positively about the opportunity
to talk and listen to people who work in different disciplines.
One of the high points of the conference was the Tuesday evening
reception on the shore of Lake Michigan. It was a perfect evening
with beautiful weather, good food, dreamy guitar music, and the
spectacular backdrop of the lake as the sun slowly set. It's not
possible to plan an evening like that. It just happens.
All the plenary presentations on Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon
were outstanding (I overhead one participant describing them as
"awesome") and one of the high points was the lifetime achievement
award presented to past Governor William G. Milliken Thursday afternoon.
The description of his achievements and contributions to maintaining
and preserving a healthy, productive environment for current and
future residents for the state of Michigan was inspiring. As he
stepped up to receive his award, the audience surged to its feet
in a spontaneous standing ovation. Governor
Milliken's Remarks.
This was an international meeting with participants from Canada
as well as Tribes/First Nation peoples from the Great Lakes area
and beyond. In recognition of the importance and shared responsibility
of protecting the wetlands of the Great Lakes: we received a special
letter from Mayor
Eddie Francis and the City of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, presented
by Mona Stonefish, our final speaker.
Once again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Jeanne Christie
